How Do I Inject My Medication?

Complete step-by-step guide: preparing your dose, choosing a site, injecting, and aftercare.

Your medication is a subcutaneous injection, which means it goes just under the skin. Here's a step-by-step guide.

Before you start

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water

  • Gather your supplies: medication vial, syringe, alcohol swab

  • Check that your medication is free from any foreign objects

Step 1: Prepare your dose

  • Clean the vial top with an alcohol swab

  • Draw air into the syringe equal to your dose

  • Insert the needle into the vial and push the air in

  • Turn the vial upside down and draw your prescribed dose

  • Tap the syringe gently to move air bubbles to the top

  • Push the plunger slightly to remove air bubbles

Step 2: Choose and clean your injection site

  • Use your stomach (abdomen), at least 2 inches away from your belly button. Rotate sites with each injection to avoid irritation.

  • Wipe the area with an alcohol swab and let it dry completely.

Step 3: Inject the medication

  • Pinch a fold of skin at your chosen site

  • Insert the needle at a 45-90 degree angle (quick, dart-like motion)

  • Push the plunger slowly and steadily to inject all medication

  • Wait 5-10 seconds before removing the needle

  • Release the skin fold and withdraw the needle

Step 4: After injection

  • Apply gentle pressure with a cotton ball if needed (don't rub)

  • Dispose of the syringe safely

  • Record your injection date and site
